Every year on the 18th October World Menopause day shines a light on the physical, mental and emotional challenges that women may face during both menopause and perimenopause.
World Menopause Day was first held in 2009 by the International Menopause Society, and each year they help to spotlight the challenges that women face during menopause, and highlighting the different research that has taken place as well as the support available for women at this stage of life.
The focus for this years World Menopause Day is ‘Lifestyle Medicine’. This theme is aimed to help highlight every day habits can make a huge difference to improving menopausal wellbeing. From the food we eat to how we sleep, move, and manage stress, lifestyle choices can have a significant impact on how women experience menopause. This year’s theme encourages everyone to take simple steps to support physical and mental health during this important phase of life.
Here are some everyday steps that might help those that are starting or currently experiencing menopause manage:
- Eating well – having a balanced diet and reducing processed foods and alcohol may help to ease hot flushes and help protect your general health
- Physical activity – staying active with even gentle exercise can lift moods and help with sleep
- Sleep – a good sleep will help to reduce brain fog and general fatigue
- Stress management – things like breathing exercises or gentle activity will help calm the body and lessen stress and general anxiety
- Self-care – making sure you keep time for yourself and your hobbies will support your own emotional wellbeing
