World Autism Awareness Day takes place every year on the second of April, coinciding with World Autism Acceptance Month which runs throughout April. On the 2nd April everyone should come together to promote understanding, inclusion and the rights of autistic people around the world. Autism Awareness Day is used to help highlight the overall importance of equal access to opportunities and support for everyone, especially those with Autism.
This year’s theme is ‘Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value’ to move beyond limiting and harmful preconceptions, and instead highlight the worth of all autistic people.
But why does autism awareness matter?
Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference that can influence how people communicate and interact with the world around them – every autistic person is unique and has different strengths, weakness and support needs. However, although awareness of autism has improved over time, many autistic people will still face significant challenges through their lifetime, hence the need and creation of World Autism Day, as well as World Autism Acceptance Month.
But how can you help? Throughout April, and on April 2nd, everyone is encouraged to take positive action, such as learning more about autism or reflecting on how you can be more inclusive. There are various community events and fundraising activities that you can also take part in, even if just in a small way, such as wearing blue on April 2nd, see below some links for this if you would like to take part!

So, make sure you start to embrace neurodiversity this April, by doing this you can help to remove barriers and create a society where autistic people feel valued and included!
